Luzon 3-2-1: Mt. Timbak, Mt. Tabayoc, and Mt. Pulag via Tawangan-Ambangeg

The first time I heard this, I was in the Akiki trail of Mt. Pulag last March 2012. At first I had no idea what it meant. However, when it was explained to me thoroughly my mind began to clear. One has to climb three mountains in four days. And those are not ordinary mountains. They are the three highest mountains of Luzon. I wanted to do this. Hence, I am planning to organize a Luzon 3-2-1 climb this November 1-4, 2012. The adrenaline rushes every time I think of this crazy idea. I hope there are other "crazies" like me out there. To those who are interested, please be free to contact this blogger.

A Tale of Two Mountains: Twin Dayhike (Mt. Talamitam-Mt. Batulao)

Double or twin dayhike is a term that refers on the itinerary of mountaineers planning two mountains in a single day. Proximity wise, there are lot of mountains that are near to each other so one can conquer one mountain in the morning and another in the afternoon. Nowadays, twin dayhikes are popular to mountaineers. And so, I engaged myself in doing one. My initial plan was to go solo but my officemate Noli, who bought a new pair of shoes, wanted to come along. There were a lot of choices to pick from but I decided the one closest to my heart, I opted for the mountains in Nasugbu, Batangas.

That's Mt. Talamitam
Mt.Talamitam

The first mountain for the day was Mt. Talamitam. It was my first time to climb this mountain. I  even don't know where will we alight the bus. Fortunately, the bus conductor knew where Sampaloc is located. From the drop off, it only took us five minutes to reach the registration ste. We just arrived on time because the one in charge was about to leave the house. After paying the 25.00 Pesos registration fee, we hired the services of Mang Rolly for the price of 300.00. After crossing the river, we went on to the mountain. The trail was covered by dried mud due to the rainfall the previous night. A few minutes later, we reached the open field. It was around 9 am so it was hot as in very hot.

It was unlike any mountain that I visited before because it was more of a farm than a mountain. Cows, horses and dogs were visible throughout the climb. It was a gradual walk towards the summit. However, a tough assault was waiting for us to reach the summit. Fortunately, another trail can be use and it is less stressful than the usual trail. But we took a lot of zigzag route just to go up stress free. However, I suffered a lot of scratch in my arms when I walked in a bunch of tall grasses.

At the summit, we saw Mt. Batulao and Pico de Loro as well. It was a pleasant view from the top. There was also a grotto at the top just like in Mt. Batulao. Our guide told us that it was donated by a well known educational and religious institute. Also present were cow dungs. I could not imagine setting camp there. After thirty minutes, we decided to descend because we have still another mountain to conquer. We even saw a couple of mountaineers who spend overnight there. Unfortunately, they did not reach the summit because the male companion was not able to figure out the right trail so they decided to just stay near the forest side of the mountain. It took us an hour to descend the mountain. Then we went on to our next mountain.

Mt. Batulao

Just 11 kilometers from Sampaloc, we reached Evercrest Golf Club. We decided to eat lunch first before resarting our trek. After we ate a not so delicious meal, we're off to another trek. This is my fourth time to be here. The said mountain was my first mountain to hike (July 2010). This is also where I had my first clearing at the summit after three unsuccessfull attempts (FEB 2011). This is also where I had my first rainless overnight camp (April 2011). Needless to say, this mountain is special to my heart. Because I know the trail by heart, I opted not to secure a guide. And also there were no kids at the front but we passed some persistent kids on the way up. One even offered a free service but I declined (for fear of DSWD and DOLE and other society groups. Joke.) I was somewhat disappointed because the usual suspects or the people you regularly meet there were not around. Of course, I understand because it was a Monday. However, we met fellow mountaineers on their way home. As we near the school, rain fall from the sky. Good thing we have umbrellas. Yes, umbrellas and not ponchos. Unusual pick but still it was good to have them. Moments later, the sun showed up again. Then when we settle on the shelter which was situated between the junction of the new and old trails, rain came back with a vengeance. Instead of going down to the old trail, I decided to pick the much easier new trail route.

parang endorser lang
When we reached the new trail campsite, the dogs sercved us our unwelcoming committee as they barked at us nonstop. After paying the 20 peso registration fee, I asked the person in charge where the fateful incident occured. (Last February 29, a first timer lost her life here in the mountain.) Peak 8, he answered. It so happened that it was just the top of where we stood from. I was curious that they went up there instead of just using the trail beside the peak. Again, curiousity kills the cat as they say, tempted me to go up there. When I got there, I pause for a moment in respect to that woman who unfortanetely lost her life. It was a sad incident and tragic news for mountaineers like me.
Reflecting at Peak 8. Site of the fateful tragedy last Feb. 29
As we near the summit, rain started to subside and eventually run out of water. But it had the last laugh as we did not have a good clearing at the summit. I just prayed in the grotto for having another safe and successful climb. However,Noli was kind of disappointed because it was his first foggy summit experience. This was his fifth mountain in three months so he should not feel so bad. After a few photos, we took the old trail this time. There were no one in sight in the old trail campsite so we did not registered and paid the required fee. It was almost for when we got out from the old trail. On our way down, we stumbled to fellow mountaineers who will spend a night there. At 17:00, Noli and I accomplished the twin day hike of Mt. Talamitam and Mt. Batulao.

And yes even I had scratches, bruises, body ache, and even sun burn as have achieved another milestone, they are just another reason why I enjoy this form of recreation.

Looking for another adventure

My Very Own Obituary: I Almost Died in Mt. Daguldol

An obituary is usually an article or message about a person who recently became deceased. A year ago, I did one for my lolo. It was hard because too much emotion were involved. This time around, I will do another but it is about me. (Sorry to disappoint everyone but I am still kicking and breathing) However I felt that I had to write it just so happen that I escaped death yet again. (It’s my seventh life already, If I am a cat I had two more left.) Before I lay down the details, I’ll tell you few things about me as a mountaineer.

Phil the mountaineer was a late bloomer. He engaged with this endeavor when he was in law school. It was almost two years ago. I can still remember it as if it was just yesterday. Being drank the night before; he was still tipsy but woke up so early in the morning to meet up with his friends. He wore a Bench T-shirt and maong pants. He had a sling bag with a jacket inside. He had his Reebok rubber shoes. Obviously he was a neophyte back then. The day started right but everything went wrong when they reached the mountain which was Mt. Batulao (811 MASL). His first venture with this hobby was a bit stormy because there was a typhoon when they got there. Even though he was unsuccessful to conquer it he vowed to return and someday reached its summit.

It was a long walk towards the mountain so Pictorial session muna Fast forward to 2012, the vinegar mountaineer turned into a seasoned hiker. He had climbed already thirteen times. (Indeed he had his unlucky number 13 in Daguldol). He reached eight different summits already. He conquered three major climbs. Also, he accomplished an Akiki-Ambangeg trail in Mt. Pulag under his belt. He even went to Visayas Island just to climb one. He had joined three affiliations just to suffice his indulgence in mountaineering. As a result, he had befriended all of its members. Speaking of which, he was with his third group, Explore Mountains. Preserve Environment. League of Independent, God-Fearing and Hospitable Trekkers (EMPE LIGHT for short). Being the most experienced hiker in the group, he was pinpointed as team leader. Although he sucked in this kind of responsibility, he still took the role whole heartedly.

Staring at where we came from

We all know that Phil was a planner not a doer. He want to do things according to plan. That is how he operated his life. Clearly, he had thorough research on their next climb so he decided to trek Mt. Daguldol in San Juan, Batangas. It stands more than 600 MASL. Even though, he had few monetary resources left, he still pushed on their chosen date. That was his character, even without money he still proceeds to his journey. To get there, four hours of travel time is to be allotted. That is why he wondered he decided to start their adventure at lunch time. As a result, he had no choice but to make the beach side trip as their first agenda.
He encountered different lot of people when he was in the mountains. He probably met every persona. It was inevitable. One has to interact with his companions one way or another. On this adventure, nine made the trip but only six reached the summit. The couple, Iris and Randy had to return to Manila early because of work. (It should be noted that mountaineering had not lost its magic touch. Like the two, It just so happen in my other group, a couple just met in the mountain last January and become sweethearts a couple of months later.) That is one of the good perks in trekking; you cannot expect what really will happen.
The other one who opted to wait on the foot of the mountain was MJ. She was exhausted during their 5 kilometer run the day before and she just recovered from a foot injury. Although Phil was against the idea of leaving a fellow mountaineer behind, he had no choice but to succumb to her decision. He did not force things. He doesn’t want to ask twice. Once is enough and twice is too much that was his principle. (That showed his immaturity as a leader. All stubbornness and no humility). The group left her in Sitio Biga.
Chilling at Mang Lizardo's place

One interesting character is Noli. Although his age is at the twilight of the calendar, his body age proves otherwise. He had stamina of a teenager. His pacing was as fast as their guide. On their descend down, he even run so he could return to MJ early. He was thoughtful. That is the trait of an elder statesman. One thing that did not go his way and the others as well was their trek was windless. It was hard to breath. The sun was torching them and there was little air to breath. Fortunately at the midway point of the mountain, refreshments were sold. Halo-halo and buko juice. Koya Noli treated me a refreshing halo-halo.

Before we continue on our Journey, Mhae decided to leave her things. Innovative, she used her malong as a make shift bag. Pola, the pretty and tall newcomer of the group followed suit. She also engaged with that idea. Thus, the two were just like strolling in the park up to the summit. There were other two newbies, Ridge and Tootz. It was their first mountain. The former struggled a bit while the latter was alright. But they were handy when Phil’s life was at stake. They were lectured hands-on lectured through their mistakes. Ridge was making his own trail. It was wrong. Pola threw a piece of garbage on the trail while Tootz picked some fruits in the tree. They were informed on the LNT Policy which is Leave No Trace. In addition, the slogan, Leave Nothing But Footprints, Take Nothing But Pictures, and Kill Nothing But Time were taught to them.

Along the way, they passed through mountaineers who made a night trek the past evening. Phil started the courtesy greetings and the others followed. Interestingly, some were greeting Korean language to Ridge because of his K-Pop appearance. It was around noon when they reached the summit. It was not a 360 degree view and an amateur’s perspective it was disappointing. Of course for Phil, it was not disappointing and in fact it was amazing because he could see the mountains as well the calm sea beneath us. They rested their a bit and proceed on their descend. Phil’s plan was to be first because it was his forte but had no choice to become the sweeper again.

They were passed the midway mark when the near tragic incident happened. Noli and Mhae were no longer in sight because of their fast pacing. Meanwhile the remaining four were trekking at a little faster than the average walk when Phil suddenly slipped in the creek. Probably it was only 30 to 50 meters but there were huge rocks below. He could have suffered broken bones. But Tootz, who was behind him grabbed his hand and Phil luckily stepped on something solid then Ridge grabbed the other hand and raised him upward. It was a close call. But he never thought he was a goner. He lived this life longer that he realized that death is inevitable. Take it from someone who was threatened to be shot at point blank range or in the mouth to be exact.

I almost fell down there

Luckily he survived death yet again but unaware of the future events, how he wished he did not. There are certain things that really had to happen and not leaving the mountain is not one of them. Because of sensitivity issues, he could not reveal what transpired when we reached the jump off point. It is safe to say that they all survived and enjoy this adventure. Due to various reasons, perhaps this will be his last time to be with this group who he treated as his family. They were beyond friends because they were brothers and sisters for him. When one is sick, they cared for him, when one had his or her birthday; they celebrate with him or her. Yes, like a family there are quarrels and issues that unavoidable but it could be resolved as a family. But things happen for a reason. He hopes it will be turned out well like the way he survived literally the cliffs of Mt. Daguldol.

Saling Pusa: A force invitation to a CWC and Caramoan Adventure

Martin Buber said that all journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware. The said quote suited well on my recent adventure this time in Camarines Sur. It was a birthday getaway weekend of Sek, who happened to be hailed from Naga city, Camarines Sur. Upon learning his plan, I invited myself to be part of it. It was a chance I would not grab because of my dream of Wakeboarding in CWC and island hopping in Caramoan, frequent shooting location of the Survivor franchise. Unknown to me there were more destinations waiting for me.

Day 0
19:00
Cubao, Quezon City
Our meet-up place was Mcdonald's Gateway. When I got there two minutes before the call time, no familiar faces were there. So I made an SMS to Corky then he told me to meet Sek in Starbucks Araneta. When I went thre, Sek was in the Food Plaza of the mall. It was like a wild goose chase without the goose. Finally, I saw Sek and Topher in one of the tables in the Food Court. We waited for Topher to finish his dinner while waiting for the others. Then, Jethmal called Sek asking where we were. To cut the long story short, we ended on the original meet up place. Dane arrived moments later then Jet returned there after entering the mall. Finally, Corky landed on the venue.

20:10
Ali Mall, Cubao
We boarded the Raymond Bus Liner enroute to Tabaco, Albay. I have a bad history with this liner but I have no choice to give it a chance. There were no empty seats on the bus probably because it was a Friday.

21:00
The driver step on the pedal and were off to our journey. It was a fast drive even if drove in EDSA's notorious points of traffic. We were in Alabang with in half an hour.

22:05
Calamba, Laguna

After exiting the South Luzon Expressway, the bus suddenly pulled over. Minutes passed and we were still not leaving. Some curious passengers went outside and found out that a flat tire caused the long wait. So we went outside, to get some fresh air. It took almost an hour to fix the problem.

Day 1
Calauag, Quezon
02:35
It was our official stop over. Jet and I went inside the canteen to buy some food. Shocked with unreasonable prices, we decided to go outside. And so we ate in a local burger chain just across the road. Topher bought a 50.00 worth of cup noodles on the said canteen.

05:25
Naga, Camarines Sur

Thanks to our driver who was in a fast and furious mode, we reached Naga City just before the sun rises. LG, who served as our welcoming committee, met us in the bus terminal. A short walk led us to SM Naga, which prompted me to the customary photo session of the mall. Then we rode a trike towards to LG's house in Canaman. After settling there, we wasted no time and went to the city.

06:00

Our first stop was a carinderia just in front of the E-Mall. There we ate a famous noodle dish there called Kinalas. It was something special because the tase was delicious eventhough the meat used was only pork instead of the traditional beef meat. We all enjoyed it however Jet who put too much spice on his soup was too sweaty while eating his meal.

06:45
Naga Cathedral

I have been here a few times during the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia but this was the first time it was not crowded. It was solemn. Peace and calm were present on the sacred place. It was a perfect time to pray. After a few shots taken, we left the cathedral.

07:30
Basilica Minore

A just concluded fun run welcomed us in front of the Basilica. Because of the event, there were a lot of people there. Howver, inside the church it was quiet as a sign of respect to Ina. I have a chance to touch her again after a long time. Then, prayed the novena in honor for her.

09:14
Canawan, Naga
After countless of picture taking, a super tiring long walk, a 1.5 bottle of coke and a piece of fried siopao, we returned to LG's house. Exhausted from the improptu visita iglesia, I just laid down on one of the matresses in the floor.

10:45

We ate lunch in one of the eateries in the city proper. It only cost PhP 225.00 for a group of seven persons. It included 5 different meals, 7 servings of rice and two liters of soft drink.

11:30
Pili, Camarines Sur

After lunch, we boarded a bus en route to Iriga. We paid PhP 10.00 for the trip. Then we rode a tricycle that will bring us to CWC, which located at the back of the provincial capitol of Camarines Sur. Yes, Pili is the capital of the province and not Naga who is the heart and soul of the province. We came just before the staff had their lunch break so after registering we just waited for our time to start. PhP 125 for one hour. PhP 40 for the rent of life vest and helmet. PhP 500.00 depositwas charged for insurance of the gears.

13:00
Winchpark, CWC

We started 15 minutes early because the staff was disturbed because of our presence during their break. The whole park was exclusive for the six of us. As my tradition, I was the last one to try. As a result, I had the best performance for the group.
I reached more than half of the park. The second try, Corky nailed it as he reached the other side. Not to be outdone, I also reached the other side but failed to finishe it minus the splash in the water. It took more than half an hour before other people showed up in the park that ended our exclusivity to the park. After an hour and so, we enjoyed this hobby. It was lot of fun even we had a lot of misses than hits. Surely, I will never forget this and I wanted to return so I could wakeboard in the
Pro's park.

14:35
Poolside, CWC

How time flies, it was time to surrender the gears back to the registration area. We spend time resting on the poolside. The guys were contented on sitting there and observing the beatiful views around the place while I took a dip in the water.
However, when I noticed that I was causing pollution on the pool, I decided to go back. There, I saw a former classmate of mine and had a conversation with him.

15:05
Lago del Ray, CWC

Just beside the wakeboard park is the Aquapark in Lago del Ray, which is also a man made lagoon. Bunch of children were having fun with the inflated stuffs floating in the water. It costs 120 per hour but we did not try it believing it is just for kids who want to have fun. Thus, we just loitered in one portion and have an instant photo shoot of ourselves.

16:10
Naga Coliseum

I went inside to the coliseum in order to see Gawin who is playing for the Ateneo de Naga but he already went home immediately after their game. Then I saw the guys wrestling with each other inside a boxing ring near the complex. Another long walk ensued. We boarded a jeepney that transported us to another one that will bring us to LG's house. (of course, the 7 of us only knows what happened there)

17:15
Canaman, Naga

We have to prepare quickly because we have to leave immediately so we can go to Nabua, where we will spend the night. Because of unforeseen events, we have to go there. Before we left, our host's mother insisted us to eat dinner first so we obliged.
Then we went back to the terminal minus LG. Eventhough we were going to his dad's place, he cannot go with us so I was tasked to be the lead guide to our destination. The said town is along the way going to our province so I know where it is. The plan was to ride a bus but there were no more bus so we rode a van going to Nabua.

20:45
Nabua, Camarines Sur

Our new host is a Physician but opted to be in the business sector. He fetched the six of us through a motorcycle. It was no habal habal so it took turns of fetching us. Topher and I were almost forgotten to be brought in the house, were the last one to arrive. Doc made dinner for us. It was plentiful. I really enjoy home made dishes especially in the provinces. After dinner, we went inside our room which was airconditioned. For a moment, we had first class accomodation.
Moments later, we went outside to have our drinking sessions. Although tired and exhausted due to our non stop activities, we decided to chill out. Doc shared some cool stories about their place and town that quite suprisingly true.

Day 2
00:21
When the bottle of brandy had its last drop, I decided to call it a night and proceed to our room. Inside the room, Sek and Jet were already asleep when I saw them. I turned off the lights before I slept in the other bed.
05:05
It was the second alarm of my phone thaw finally woke me up. Due to the long travel ahead of us, we have to leave early. I turned on the lights so the guys could wake up. Due to a few hours of sleep, we were quite sleepy to wake up. But we have to leave, so one by one we prepared our things and move to our next destination. Meanwhile, Doc prepared us some breakfast that includes pansit bato. It was made from their neighbor town, Bato. Sek was the only one who did not ate breakfast because of his diet. We had a short tour of the house before we eventually leave the place. LG's father even rented a trike to transport us to the town proper. He even paid for our fare. I really admire his hospitality for accepting strangers in his humble abode.

07:15
Pili, Camarines Sur

We alighted the van in a diversion road to ride a vehicle enroute to Sabang port. While waiting, the guys bought some bread and shared to everybody. My stomach was unfriendly during that time so when I saw a gas station, I hurriedly went to their comfort room. After I unloaded my dirt, I was shocked to see a bidet spray there and it was working. You have no idea how I envy that rest room. Then I saw my friends starting to load their things to the jeepney so I rushed towards them. Because the PUj was almost full, they decided to go topload meaning at the roof of the jeep. I had no plans of toploading so I seated beside the driver.

08:54
Sabang, Camarines Sur

We arrived on schedule on the port. After writing in the passenger's manifest, we waited for the boat to arrive. Few minutes later, it came. All passengers were anxious to get on board but have to wait for awhile to unload the passengers inside. To board the boat, one should walk in a makeshift bridge that men had to carry in order to reach the vessel. After settling the things, I seated beside Corky. Then a lady seated besides me. I was quite fortunate to seat besides her. She's the type your eyes would not leave its sight. It was a two hour ride so I thought God gave me 120 minutes just to talk with her. Of course, I wasted almost all of it. Blame it to my shyness. However, I did have quite few but interesting conversations with her. She was nice and very accommodating to my queries. Although I got some details about her, the sad part is that I did not even got her name. :(

The girl in blue dress was the one I let go away.  I hope I can met her again.

12:00
Guijalo Port, Caramoan

The port in Guijalo is diffetent from Sabang because it is more commercialized than the latter. However, to cross on the mainland, we should board a small boat. When we got there, Jet already hired a tricycle driver named Manuel that will bring us to Paniman where we will get our boat to deliver us in the islands of Camaroan. It was quite a long drive to the other side so we settled our things first in the town proper. I suggest that we eat in Lutong Bahay. My friends had no idea what I was talking about so they laugh. Then Manuel stopped right in front of the said eatery. Of course, they were surprised so I shared a secret of a traveler like me, i.e. Research. Hungry and thirsty, we wasted no time to eat lunch there.

13:24
Market Side near St. Michaels Church, Caramoan
We bought a fish and a cooking pot to cook rice. Then we went to a store that we had bought all the things we needed in our camping trip. After settling all the necessities we have to bring, our sojourn continued. Kuya Manuel led us to her sister in Barangay Paniman. After some deliberation, we agreed to used Christine 2 (the name of the boat). We were asked which island we want, so I said loudly Matukad Island. At first, I was kind of disappointed that the said island was close because of the Survivor Franchise but was shocked and happy upon hearing that it was opened a day earlier.

14:41
Matukad Island, Caramoan Peninsula

    Aerial shot of Matukad Island

To reach there, it will only take 15 minutes from the shoreline. When we got there a handful of island hoppers were already there. I instantly looked for a good camping site. Corky led the way in setting up the tents. Jet and Dane were game on learning how to pitch the tents. Meanwhile, Sek and Topher were the ones in charge of the food because of their culinary skills. Upon settling down, another boat arrived composed of other island hoppers. It included my preaty seatmate. As always, my shyness were all over me so I just went to the lagoon where the mysterios giant bangus is residing. However, one should climb the rocks in order to reach the lagoon. Jet accompanied me on this exploration. I am an experience hiker so I thought it would be easy for me. Luckily for me, I did have any injuries or scratches because of the edgy rocks. Jet took some photos of me at the top of the rock but when it was my turn to use the camera it shut down automatically. I tried three times but to no avail.

I was not spooked but I just surrendered as a sign of respect to the things that science could not even explain. I did see the milkfish which is about two feet. However, I did not see my "future" when I returned to the shore. Apparently, they left. Another blown chance for me. Haissst.

16:55

I had a chance to talk to the boatmen about the myth surrounding this island. One of them was even possessed when he went down in the lagoon. Also, one foreigner could not go back after swimming there. However, I was interested on the mythe of the two giant bangus. Before there were two milkfish over there in the lagoon, however, a fisherman caught one of them and ate it. According to one of them, the son of the fisherman died instantenously with no reason at all. Upon hearing, I hurriedly go back to my friends to share what I have discovered.

17:22
Just before sunset, we had the whole island by our lonesome. We were on Survivor mode. Six castaways stranded on the island. Later, we decided to have dinner. Topher and Sek prepared inihaw na isda. Then, they fried some luncheon meat. The meals were awesome.

18:32

We started our socials right after dinner. Three Empe Lights were just fine for the six of us. We shared some stories while drinking. Then the researchers from the Survivor show returned to study the seasnake found in one of the rocks. When one of them passed us, we asked him if the snake is venomous. The foreigner gladly answered, "Yes, they're venomous but they don't like to bite. Just stay away from the rocks. I was not bothered by the snakes instead I was still trying to uncover the mysteries I witnessed in this island. But I was not avail to do so. I even so an image of waman walked behind Sek. It was probably the goddess who guards the island. Our bonfire also makes an appear-disappear act. It happened four times. Still, we lied down in the fined sands of the islands and relaxed with our booze.

Day 3
05:45
For the second straight day, I was the one who rose up first signaling all of us to went out of our tents. The sun has not yet to rise so we decided to go swimming. The water is clear however lots of see weeds were all over the place. Stll, it was the best beach I been to. Sorry Guimaras, Bolinao and Nagsasa (which all are pretty beaches). After a while, I brought them up to the lagoon. It was high tide so the water reached the shores. I went up first so they could see where to climb. Sek followed suit. Then Dane was next. Jet, Topher and Corky followed suit. IT did not took us long to reach their. However, Dane failed to reached the other side because of fatigue. My camera worked at the top of the rocks but after one shot of the lagoon it mysteriously shut down again. When we descend to the island, bunch of people were already there including our boatmen. It was time for us to leave.

07:15
Just before we leave, the DENR people came to close the island. It was ironic because it felt that we really had to be there. One day it was close then when we arrive it opened then when we left it was closed again. Ironic, isn't it. We did not go to any islands. Probably it was my fault because I did not force my friends to do so. Still, I was satisfied with what transpired. I was able to enjoy a nice weekend with my brods. (This was the first time; a weather forecast went wrong, I am very thankful for the good weather).

When we reached Paniman, we took a bath just beside a well. We took turns in reaching the pail of water just like what Jack and Jill did minus the hill. Few minutes later, Kuya Manuel arrived to fetch us.

09:03

Before we go back to Guijalo port, we bought some souvenir shirts in the town proper. Then we stopped by shortly in St. Michael's church to pray for our safe trip home and also thanking for giving us a fine weather and all of us are still safe. When we arrived in Guijalo port, the boat was about to leave so we hurriedly went inside there. We did not even pay the terminal fee. But we wrote in the passengers manifest.

12:00
Sabang, Camarines Sur

We arrived sound and safe in Sabang Port. This time, i did not have a beautiful companion beside me but I could not complain at least this was the first trip that I have long conversation with a pretty stranger. Next time, I will try to befriend one.

At around 14:30 we arrived in SM Naga. We ate there. I will not name the restaurant because of my bad experience to them. I will not advertise for a business establishment that employs people who are stubborn to bring soups and serve rice to their customers. (FU) Then the five of us except Sek went to the comfort room in order to load extra baggages. WHile waiting for Dane and Jet, Topher made conversation with one of the saleslady. He asked, “Nakapunta ka na ba ng Caramoan, dun kasi punta namin. The pretty sales lady replied, Di pa po sir. Topher answered back with this, Bakit po ang gaganda ng mga sales lady dito. In which Corky shouted, Boom!

17:30

Mt. Pulag the Second Time Around (via Akiki-Ambangeg Route)

Merriam Webster defines the word DIFFICULT as hard to do, make, or carry out. In layman’s term it just simply means hard. For a Filipino mountaineer, Akiki is synonymous to the said word whenever he or she took that route upwards to the summit of Mt. Pulag, which is Luzon's highest mountain. One popular website rated the said trail as 7 out of 9 in terms of difficulty. Thus, it is safe to say that it is a hard climb to the summit. Even though there is an easy trail to the peak of the mountain that is the Ambangeg Route which is also known as the Executive Trail because of its wide pathway and accessible trail, many seasoned mountaineers or hikers opt the alternative route which is known as the killer trail. Most mountaineers who have conquered Mt. Pulag, which stands majestically at 2,922 Meters above Sea Level, via the Ambangeg route, dream to use the Akiki trail when they come back there.

That's where our story starts. Almost a couple of years ago, the author together with his classmates in law school conquered Pulag amidst the non-stop rain and violent winds surrounding the mountain. He reached the summit, unfortunately there was no clearing at the time so he vow to return but will use the traverse trail i.e. Akiki on his next climb there. Alas, after one and a half year since climbing there, he had the opportunity not only to return to Mt. Pulag but also the chance to trek the treacherous Akiki trail. In this sojourn, he accompanied new faces i.e. the Edge Outdoor Group. Actually, he is the new guy in this group because he only has one stint with them during their climb in Mt. Cristobal last month. Even though he provided constant communication problems with them, he eventually made the trip. As expected, he was the last one to arrive in Baguio.

Despite weather forecasts of heavy rain, the group decided to climb Pulag but agreed collectively will use the Ambangeg Route for safety reasons. On their way to Benguet, the weather was perfect. They even had pictures in Ambuklao Dam which was recently reopened last year since it was closed during the 1990 earthquake. Over in DENR station, the group had a change of heart and chose Akiki instead. They secured a guide there. His name is Teddy Aguinse. He was dressed like a regular mountaineer. He was different from the other guides who just wore t-shirts and sandals. He was kind of strict at first because he overheard the author's intention of buying alcohol which was prohibited at the mountain. From DENR, they went to the jump-off point of the Akiki trail which was an hour and a half drive. After the customary picture taking, the group went uphill to the ranger station. It was a difficult assault of around 200 meters due to its cemented surface. They settled the guide fees at the Ranger station, which served as the luncheon area for the hikers. After they had lunch, they prepared for their trek to Eddet River wherein they will settle camp. Moments before they leave, the rain made a heavy downfall. In an instant, they were looked trapped inside the station where all doors and windows were locked and closed. Minutes later, the rain started to subside. It was a sign that they start their journey. Indeed they did. And so the eight of them (Sir Jhun, his brother Zandro, Sir Geoff, Ma'am Ana, her sister Ma'am Lorna, Sir Dennis, Shane, and the author) commenced their adventure that supposedly would not happen.
Eddet River

They passed by in a school just above the ranger station. They saw the Castle Mountaineers there where they settled for their lunch. It was a long trek. Really, it was. After climbing a hill, they have to go down and push forward to another one before reaching the river. One cannot deny the presence of Mother Nature. There were trees as huge as the skyscrapers in the metropolis. Of course there was lots of grass between the established trails. Then there were the cows that were busy doing their business. Although it was raining, it was fortunate to see those marvelous things in the landscape beside Mt. Pulag. Few hours have passed and after a lot of upward-downward trekking, the group had reached the Eddet River. As if intended by the grand design, heavy rain fell down before they start to pitch their tents. And so, a classic Bayanihan was inspired. As instructed by Teddy, some held the ground sheet upwards to cover the tent from the rain. Pitching the tent is not difficult but given the extreme circumstances, it was not easy either. However, five tents were set up in just minutes led by Ma'am Ana, which according to her was her first time. It was an amazing feat. After setting up, all were tired and went inside their respective tents. No session not even dinner were done during the evening because of the rain.

End of Day one

It was still dark when their eyes started to open. Even though feeling drowzy, they have to wake up early so that they could commence their real journey to Pulag. Because none of them had dinner the night before, everyone was hungry for breakfast. Hence, it was like a feast. Rice, Maling, Daing and Tinapa. The leftovers served as packed lunch later in the morning. It was still twilight when they broke camp and proceed to their trek. Most of them had run out of water so they have to gather some from the river. However to cross the river, one should use a bridge made of steel which is hanging from each side of the river. Obviously it is dubbed as the Hanging Bridge. Again, customary pictorials arose near the bridge. Then comes the assault. The pathway is steep. One has to burst energy to every step he takes. The assault was like a zigzag route. You turned right and then you will turn left and vice versa. Way up to Marlboro country boast scenic views like the neighboring mountains of Pulag. Moreover, trees were all over the place aside from the chirping of the birds. This is when the group was broke into two.

Shane, Zandro, and Jhun together with Teddy were on the fore front while Anna, Geoff, Dennis, Lorna and the author (who served as the sweeper) were in the tail end. The pace of the former was normal while the latter was not so due to constant photo-ops(mostly of the author). In one long break, the five noticed that the others were already far away from them. Grievances such as Teddy were just guiding three people instead of eight. In an instant, warm heads prevailed on a cool weather. Then as if planned; Teddy appeared like a mushroom from out nowhere.

He was blasted from all directed by the two siblings. Imagine a guy being shot by an AK-47 them shot again by a Glock-9 pistol. Yes. It was murder. Although is sounded a brutal beating or bashing which depends on your interpretation, the two were still on the side of the fence meaning they argued with reason. Nonetheless, it was too much for Teddy who was not able to defend him due to the non-stop onslaught of the two. In fairness to him, he acknowledges his faults although it seems that he just surrendered from the unlimited bashings he obtained from the two. As penance perhaps, he volunteered to carry one of their bags.
Aside from the hot tempers, the sun started to make it presence felt. Fortunately, they were all in the E-camp that protected them from the sun. While the men were topless because they put their wet things under the sun to let it dry, the others were savoring their long awaited breathers. Minutes have passed when they decided to move forward to Marlboro Country which serves as place to eat their lunch. On their way there, the sun was already scorching but thanks to the huge trees surrounding the trail, they were shielded from the heat. Nevertheless, going upwards is still a struggle due to the loads they were carrying as if they were like the cross burdened by Christ. That is when a sort of entertainment arose just before they reached their target site. The two sisters agreed to take turns of carrying the bag. They collectively decided to take turns every thirty minutes. Of course being the younger of the two, Ma'am Ana was the first to carry the bag. At first the idea sounded good but when minutes before the arrange time, the eldest sister was already far from her so she cannot take her turn. Intentionally or not, she took her bag moments after the agreed time but when it transpired, they were minutes away from the camp. It took another couple of hours before they arrive. A bunch of mountaineers were already there. Some were resting while others were already preparing for their ascend to the saddle camp. Because their lunches were already packed, it took them only less than an hour in the said camp.

The afternoon was the exact opposite of the morning. It means that while the sun was there to witness their struggles during the morning, it was absent in the afternoon because rain took over in penalizing these poor souls. Even though they were inside the mossy forest that is also covered by a bunch of huge trees, they still cannot escape the wrath of the rain. Rain drops were falling inside and out of the forest, which somewhat transformed into a maze because it was so long and tiring. It seemed that it was endless that it will have any exit to the grasslands. The forest is quite beautiful but because of the rain, it was hard to notice. Beauty was blocked by the beast. No one can appreciate it because the minds were already set of overcoming the rain by moving out of the forest.

It was still raining, when they finally reached the grasslands. This time, another obstacle has to overcome and yet another pain to endure, the water flowing in the trail. Some paths were already flooded but had no choice but to step on it. As a result, water entered the shoes. Thus, the socks and feet were wet. Hunger also became a factor. Due to fatigue, food really became a necessity. A pair of cloud 9 bars and a piece of flat tops were the only ones available but it was enough for the final stretch to the saddle camp. It was about half a day when they could hear the sounds of the hikers who were already in the saddle camp. Then there was a SWOOSH. No, it was no Michael Jordan jump shot. It was Ma'am Ana's signature move whenever she nears the destination. And then finally after twelve hours of journey to the land above the clouds, they arrive to their to the saddle camp. Upon reaching, they respectively put up their tents simultaneously. Just like the other day, the night seemed to be fast because of fatigue and the unfriendly rain.

Later that evening, the rain had died down. It was replaced by a magnificent show in the sky. It was perfect for stargazers or astrologers. In fact, a shooting star appeared out of nowhere. The stars were so splendid that one cannot see it in the metropolis due to the pollution being made every day. It was one memorable moment that can only be trumped by the sea of clouds in the morning.

End of Day Two

What promises to be a perfect weather in the morning was shattered into pieces by the rain and the fog it created. No clearing in the summit is the only clear message when they woke up. Better luck next time. It was like the mountain played the mountaineers as if it was just a little kid making pranks to his elders. Bitter. Perhaps. Painful. Extremely yes. Sad. A big no. Despite the fact that none of them had the chance to see the clouds froming like an ocean just below the summit, the experience going up there is always be treasured. It was one of a kind experience for mountaineers, either seasoned or novice. It is a kind of fulfillment in climbing this mountain that one had to endure physical and mental challenges in using the Akiki trail. In fact, some were teary eyed when they reached the top. Remember, in life you have to climb the mountain before you reach the top. Literally, they had done it and were successful in doing it.

Enough of the drama. Going down is now easier because of the Ambangeg route. However, it is still long because again the mountain is so high that it stretched the whole Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA). It's the third day already but the bags are still heavy but not as the same weight before. Still it was a burden to carry. In fact, a hiker almost fell on his way down from the summit because of the loaded bag he carried. It was kind of scary because it was face first. His two female companions just stared at him. Sir Zandro gladly helped him who survived the ordeal with minor bruises on his hand. It was quite envious because he got a souvenir from the mountain. Kidding aside, easy or difficult there is nothing wrong in taking precaution because one's life is the exchange here and it is indeed a serious matter.

Fortunately, there were no winds like the last time the author went there. Only muds produced by the rain were visible in the trail. In every step, there was mud. But it was kind of helpful for the mountaineers because it prevented the path to be slippery. As proof, there were no incidents of slides made by any member of the group. It's probably a record. Still. A long way ahead. They just reached the camp 2 site where they prepared their lunch. All remaining canned goods were opened. The remaining rice was cooked. And the surviving daing were finally eaten.

Going down was like a walk in the park but it did not felt like that because of fatigue. All were set of reaching the ranger station. The route is really easy because of its wide path. There were no difficult trails other than a 400 meter surge from camp 1. After that it was just a long trek to the Ranger Station. And after six hours of trekking, they arrived safely and unharmed. After what have transpired and happened in three days in the mountain, the aftermath of surviving the treacherous Akiki-Ambangeg route is Hope. Hoping that someday will return with a new quest in mind. Hoping it will be gracious of experiencing the sea of clouds every mountaineer had dreamt of. Hoping that the magnificent Pulag will always remain magnificent. Hoping next time that it will not play games anymore to its visitors. Hoping for another safe adventure in this mountain.

The End

(Author's Note: Acknowledges the great organizing skills of Ma'am Ana who had done a splendid job in organizing this climb. And Thanks to Brods Geoff and Jhun for assisting me in evey step of the way. Also to Sir Zandro for providing me the pacing I needed during the darkest hour of my climb. Moreover, Sir Dennis and Ma'am Lorna, thank you for sharing me your sheet in covering my tent so that I have a relaxing sleep. And to Shane for supplying the Daing who served my dinner in the saddle camp. Of course thank you all for sharing this experience with me. 'til next time!)

EMPE LIGHT Adventure in Mt. Manalmon

Dear Mt. Manalmon,

Last March 4 and 5, yours truly and nine others went to conquer you personally. We sought for adventure. Alas, we indeed had a memorable adventure. Even though your quite short for a mountain (just 198 MASL), you have provided a lot of excitement for our group, which was later dubbed as EMPE LIGHT short for Explore Mountains. Preserve Environment. League of Independent, God-fearing, Hospitable Trekkers. Here's what transpired during those two days.

"Five Star Hotel"

Our meet-up place was the Five Star Terminal in Cubao because we will ride a Cabanatuan bound bus en route to San Miguel, Bulacan. The first was to arrive was Francis. He was standing near the personnel booth of the said bus station when I arrived. Afterwards, Randy came just moments when I greeted Francis. Then I left them to eat in a nearby convenience store. When I came back I saw four girls* (Mhae, Iris, Luisa and MJ) with Francis and Randy. Then I asked for Red and they pointed me outside where Red was smoking his cigarette. Thirty minutes later, Noli and Oliver had arrived.

*The girls met prior in Pioneer, Mandaluyong. They rode a taxi, One of them (just call her Daldalita) instructed the driver to drive them to Cubao. Asked where in Cubao, she promptly answered Five Star Hotel to which the driver responded that it is in Makati not in Cubao because he just came from there.

After a short while, we boarded a bus that will bring us to you. The fare was 117.00 PhP. The conductor aired Ghost Rider 2 for the enjoyment of the passengers. More than a couple of hours later, we alighted the bus in Brgy. Camias, San Miguel, Bulacan. From there we rode a tricycle which cost 240.00 per trike. It took almost an hour to get to Sitio Madlum. We were unfortunately to get unruly drivers because they charged us additional 15.00 pesos for the entrance which was their obligation to pay. Moreover, they did not drop us off in the jump off point as a result we walk down towards the river.

"Julie Vega"

In order to get to the registration area, we have to cross the Madlum River. Crossing it has many options like riding a raft, a long walk, zipline, swim or cross the monkey bridge. We all chose to ride the raft because no one will assist as yet in the bridge. At the booth we met Mang Tamang, who eventually became our guide. He told us the guide fee for overnight is 600.00 PhP. Before we proceed in our journey, we had our lunch there. Some brought packed lunch while others ordered some food there. But Redentor or Red for short stood out the most. He only ate Kamote and some chips thus he looked mentally unfit for the climb because he could not hear properly some words shouted to him.

Thirty minutes past one o' clock, we started our journey. As tradition, a prayer is done before trekking a mountain. Hence, our spiritual leader, Mary Jane or MJ led the prayer. After that inspiring message to God, Mang Tamang led us to the trail. On our way, we went through a cave where a defunct teleserye previously shoot there. Mang Tamang shared some of his experiences with the staff and cast of the said show. The cave was dark but it was just small that we reached the other side faster than I expected. Then we had to cross flowing water of the river. The stones were slippery but it was not difficult to step on it. Few steps later we reached the foot of the mountain. We rested there for awhile. Shot some pictures with the big rocks beside the river. Our guide suggested that we kill time by camping there for some time so the boys drank some brandy while the girls rested in the tent. While drinking, I opened a topic about Julie Vega, a former child star who already passed away. Kuya, as I fondly called our guide recollected stories in regards to her. That conversation promptly scared MJ.

Reaching the Summit

An hour later, we decided to climb the mountain. It was a quick hike that only took us less than an hour to ascend because it was all assault to the top. Despite your height, I was too exhausted due to the heat as well as to the assault yet after reaching the summit, it was all worth it. Like most summits that i have conquer, the summit boasts a 360 degree view ranging from Mt. Arayat to Mt. Gola. The province of Pampanga though distant is seen by the naked eye as well. Also, the Madlum River is easily seen at the top. From the summit, the camp site is just ten meters away. We pitched our tents in the site. Because it was a Sunday, there were no other mountaineers there beside us. I felt we owned the mountain because it was exclusive for only to us.

EMPE LIGHT group photo

Being the elder statesmen of the group, Noli and Oliver were reliable in preparing the food for our dinner. Noli's specialty was Adobo sa asin. It was so delicious that I almost forgot my name. Even though we had brought our owned food, we shared it to everybody. Red brought some fried siomai while Mhae and Iris had the traditional Adobo. It was like family even if we just met a few days earlier or that very exact day for some of us. We just connected to each other because we all share the same enthusiasm in this endeavor. For some moments, we forgotten our life in the metro and just inspired with what Mother Nature had presented to us.

Then the socials followed. Oliver aka Bogart provided the alcohol. The main attraction was Jose Cuervo, a very dear friend of mine. During this time, we shared stories and even laughed at them. There was one incident that I felt something that started to scare MJ again. She was so scare that she lied to Luisa's shoulder for comfort. It turned out that there was a dog sniffing for some food we left in the area. When we ran out of alcohol, we were "bitin" and it was only half an hour past nine. The girls went inside their tent while some of the boys went to their respective tents. Francis and I asked our guide if we can go to the summit. One of the unwritten code was no hiker should go to the summit at night because of the darkness and the influence of alcohol as well. However, we were not even tipsy and the moon provided some light so Mang Tamang granted our request and he joined us. From there, I had a magnificent view of the sky. I could see the stars and its constellations in the universe. Minutes later, we decided to descend to the campsite but after reaching there, Iris asked if we can return to the summit. We return there, this time, Randy joined us as well. We stayed there for almost two hours when Iris felt that we are freezing up there.

Bright New Day

When I went to sleep, I heard someone snoring. It sounded like a large ferry in the ocean. I thought it was Red who was sleeping already inside my tent. Fortunately, he wasn't the one making that noise. (I will not reveal the "bapor", just wait for the comments). I woke up at six in the morning. There was still no sun so I had plenty of time to prepare. Then minutes later, I decided to ascend to the summit in order to witness the sunrise. The rest of the group followed just in time to view the glorious rise of the sun. I envy most of my friends becuse they were lucky to have a magnifient view in their very first climb. (I had mine in my fourth attempt) It was like a photo shoot. Variation of poses were made while the sun rises in front of our eyes.

Then we decided to head back to the registration site where we will prepare our breakfast. Again it was not a difficult descend. I even run while carrying my things. We used a quite relatively easy trail compared to the one we used the other day. It turned out our guide want us to experience a tough ascend to the mountain. As we walk towards the destination, Mhae bought some caimitos for everyone.(Mj forcibly got my share). Our breakfast was as delightful as our dinner because the menu was still the same but Oliver added Ma-ling or luncheon meat. Although, were not in the mountain anymore there are plenty of things to do in this bright new day.

Monkey Bridge

 Buwis Buhay moment

Our next activity was spelunking in Bayukbok cave. To get there we must cross again the river. This time with Mang Tamang, we used the Monkey Bridge. It was a cable line tied in a tree in one end and to another one in the other side. It hangs 10 to 15 meters above the river. All of us were excited to cross it. However, Red backed out and MJ, who has fear of heights joined him. They used the raft instead. Francis was the first one to cross. Iris followed him. Then Mhae. Issa who was quite small bravely followed her. After awhile Oliver was up next to the challenge. Noli followed afterwards as well as Randy. I was the last one to cross it. While doing it, I was still smiling in front of the cameras. Red was the one who shot the photos while we were crossing the bridge. After some time, I finally landed and we went to our next destination.

Bayukbok Cave

Mang Tamang led us inside to Bayukbok cave. It was fun even though there was a lot of obstacles just ro reach the other side of the cave. First we went down though rappelling. Then we entered some thin hole of the cave. Afterwards, we had to use a ladder to climb its upper portion. it was dark there so we have some flashlights. Oliver was almost have an accident but it wasn't his time left but a reverse z mark in his back was left as a reminder of that incident. Then we entered another small hole, initially I thought Red who is a big guy, will have trouble but he passed there as if he was thin. There were also instances that MJ had troubles but one of our guides who went along with us helping her every time. As if she was a damsel in distress wai

ting for her prince to rescue her. Finally after an hour of intense walk inside the cave we reached the other end but we have to make a careful descend because of the thick rock formation there.

Thumbs Up! Cave explorer and not a miner.

Relaxation

We returned to the registration camp for our lunch. This time I swum the river to reach the said area. It was not too deep so had no toruble crossing it. After picking up my things, I went back to the river in order to relax and remove my exhaustion from exploring a cave. All my stress was relieved in this memorable two days. I had so much fun with my new friends. From Red who invited all of us. To Oliver and Noli who provided the alcohols as well as the cooking services for the group. To MJ who led the prayer in everytime I asked her to lead us in communicating to God. To Luisa who there when MJ was so scared, To Randy and Francis who were shooting marvelous photos every time they see magnificent scenes. To Mhae who invited her friend Iris in this adventure. And to Iris who joined this trip even though we all never met before. I give my sincere gratitude to all of you. This is what this so called vice of mine gives to me. Having a great time in the outdoors with true people is a treasure I will always keep in my heart.

Sincerly Yours,

Phil

Field Report on Mt. Cristobal

One of the overused quotes we often hear is the dreaded and famous, "Don't judge the book by its cover." It is so common that I will use it to express my thoughts on my recent mountain experience. Legend has it that Mt. Cristobal is a haven of evil spirits lurking in its surroundings. Moreover, it is said so the opposite of its neighbor, Mt. Banahaw which is popularly known as the Holy Mountain. Hence, the former is dubbed as the Devil's Mountain. Because of its moniker, going to the said mountain made me not think twice but thrice. Alas, I opted to hike it due to a six month drought of hiking.

One can reach the said place through boarding a Lucena-bound bus from Buendia. Tell the conductor, you are headed to San Pablo City, Laguna. Fare is 124.00 PhP. Then go to the wet market which is near to Liana's supermarket. Find a jeepney en route to Dolores. (Sir Jhun, convinced the driver to bring us to the jump-off point for a fare of 50.00 PhP per head.) Try to be hospitable to the people there, you'll never know that the one you are teasing is a policeman. (Based from a true story) After more than an hour ride, You'll be drop off near the foot of the mountain. Then it becomes little tricky because there is a road filled with cement on your way to the Montelibano House. The aforementioned place is where you will settle things before your ascent to the mountain. You can use their water and rest room as well. You'll end up contributing for their funds at the range of 5.00 to 20.00 PhP.

To tell you frankly the ascent is not a walk in the park. The terrain is mostly steep but is covered of various trees. However, on the way up, the trail is on the edge of a cliff or a ravine that you'll only step the roots of the trees in order to reach the other side of the trail. If you're into adventure this might be good for you. Along the way, you will see Mother Nature in its finest. You'll marvel at the huge trees surrounding the mountain. It is a pleasant sight compared to the skyscrapers we are accustomed to in the metropolis.

The camp site in the crater of the mountain is around 3 to 5 hours from the house. It depends on your pacing. (Our group reached it for five hours due to photo-shoots and long breaks that were badly needed during the ascend. The crater has a lagoon, which has soft land that you cannot set up camp there. The mountain is so high that you should bring a jacket. It is freaking cold out there. (Charge to experience, I did not have any jacket with me. Fortunately, one fellow mountaineer kindly lent her poncho to me.)
Moreover, there is no water source here so better bring lots of water. The summit is around an hour or so from the crater. However due to the rain, we did not go to the summit. Besides, there is nothing to see due to the fog covering the mountain. Going down is quite easy than going up. It took me just couple of hours and a couple of downhill slides to reach the house. (It was raining during our descend.)

Overall, the mountain is not really the same mountain it is being advertised. There might some unexplainable things but it is just one of the things that make the said mountain sound mysterious. You know a thing or two about it but then again there are new things that you discover about it. Also, the locals residing there are very hospitable so do not be shy asking for assistance. Mt. Cristobal is pleasant to people just be respectful to her and nothing bad will happen. (In my case, I went up there with one friend but when I went home, I have 14 new friends.)
