Guimaras: A Place of Worthwhile Vacation

Where can you find a receptionist of a province? Yes, you read it right. There is no typographical error here. During the long weekend, I was astonished that there was a lady there in the front desk giving information about their province. This place is about 15-30 minute boat ride from Iloilo City. This province is Guimaras.

Arrival at Jordan Port. No, it's not owned by MJ.

Guimaras is known for its mangoes and its beaches. Unfortunately, we just experienced the latter because  the former are seasonal. But we able to see some place there like the smallest plaza in the country, its provincial capitol and the famed Trappist Monastery.

My ego is bigger than this plaza. (Just kidding)

No, I'm not with a monk.

After the 45-minute tricycle ride (Yes, we rode a trike for PhP250.00), we arrived in Alubihod town. We stayed in Raymen's Beach Resort. It boasted nipa huts, fan rooms, and air-conditioned room. We took the air-con room. It was no 5-star accommodation but it was worthwhile. When I saw the beach I was amazed by its clearness and calmness. I could attest that it is not a dump like famous beaches in our country. The water was clean. As proof, I did not have any rashes (my skin is sensitive. LOL.)

It could pass as a Billboard Ad in EDSA.

I wished Michael Phelps was here. He would love here.

An Encounter with an Azkal

For starters, I am a huge sports buff. Anything related to sports, I am pretty sure I know a thing or two about it. I am more interested about an athlete's performance than the athlete itself.

I don't usually get excited when I see a prominent athlete in our country. I value much their efforts in their respective sports but I do not perceive them as icons that really matter in my life like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods achivements do to me.

Strangely, on my first ride in an airplane after two decades since the last one, I saw a familiar face. At first, I thought it was a taxi or bus driver. Then I saw his name tag that says Chieffy Caligdong. He plays for the Philippine Soccer National Team called Azkals. He was with his family, so I was shy to confront him. While in the air, I keep telling myself that I should not be so anxious of meeting him because he is not a Rooney or a Ronaldinho. But the sports fan hidden deep inside my heart wants to interact with him.

After we landed in Iloilo City, I spotted him waiting for his baggage. My friend Dennis, whom I told who that person was, nearly dragged me to Caligdong in order for me to have a picture taken with him. As a result, I approached him and addressed him as "Sir" because he is enlisted in the Air Force. He gladly accept my invitation of having a photo taken with him and his little son. Then the crowd notice it, and lined as well to have a picture taken with the famed Azkal as well.

A Prayer of a Desperate Backpacker: Wishing to be part of Hermosa Festival in Zamboanga City

Dear Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragosa,

Como esta, I have a lousy spanish vocabulary so I will just pray in English.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with you.

(Good day! How are you? As for me, I am still aspiring to travel in various places of our country. I have never been to Mindanao before and one of the places I want to go there is Zamboanga City.)

Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

(And because I am having financial troubles for my travel leisures/escapades, kindly help me to win a free air travel transport from Air Philippines so I can be in the Hermosa Festival and participate in various tributes for your feast day.)

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

(As you know, I am a history lover so I would appreciate the said place very well because it bestows a lot of historical landmarks as well as cultural heritages.)

pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

(I knew pretty well that this is a selfish prayer but you being gracious, I could not help myself of praying this chance of visiting your beloved city. A heartful of gratitude for your time in listening/reading my prayer. Wishing for a positive response. Thank you.)

Amen.

My Most Unforgettable Basketball Game

Black Mamba, Durantula, D-Rose, and CP3. No, they are not a bunch of computer virus or villains of any Marvel superhero that you will watch in the big screen. They are nicknames of NBA players who visited Manila a few days ago. And they are not just NBA players, they are NBA Superstars. It happened because Smart Gilas, our national basketball team, needed to play more games before they play the upcoming FIBA Asia tournament in China this September. Initially, they planned to go to abroad but due to injuries they aborted the plan. Then came the NBA lockout. Due to the NBA owners and players did not reconcile their CBA, the players have now an unforeseen future. The best option for them now is overseas. Then out of the blue, one brought the idea of assembling a collection of present NBA stars to play a tuneup game against Gilas. Chot Reyes, the coach of Talk N Text bought the idea and told it to Manny Pangilinan. And the rest as they say is history.

I knew they were coming almost a month before the event. I was eager to see them in person. Kobe was a late addition to the list but he was the main crowd drawer of the event. He is worth the 400,000 USD, reportedly paid to him for the two games. One of my bucket list is to watch an NBA game but it probably will not happen in this lifetime but this game is close to that so I grabbed this once of a lifetime opportunity and to witness these incredible ball players show their skills. And no matter what I will show up in the arena. (Earlier that day I lost my wallet and so I have no money. Fortunately, I bought the ticket a week earlier and placed it in a safe place. I guess there is no stopping me to see my idols in person.)

Araneta Coliseum is most popularly known as the Big Dome. Every big event in the country happened in this venue. This was the sight of Thrilla in Manila where Ali fought galiantly to defeat Frazier. Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift and Incubus held their concert there. The Binibinig Pilipinas annualy staged its event in the Big Dome. Fittingly, it should hold the Smart Ultimate All-Star Weekend.

Shoot Around

I arrived in the Smart Araneta Coiliseum (contrary to beliefs, it was not bought by MVP, it was just leased for five years) at exactly noon. I took a spot in the General Admission section when I noticed one guy taking shots one at a time at the court while the players of Smart Gilas were on the other side. That guy wore number two and his name is Derek. I wish he was the Derek Jeter, who sports the number 2 and plays shortstop from the Yankees but clearly he wasn't. He is Derek Fisher and plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. By the way he has five NBA rings, which is two more than Larry Bird. And here he was shooting balls from all spots of the court for an exhibition game and it is not their turn to shoot around. He showed me the value of work ethic and I appreciated it by applauding him. Here I was just happy to see them play but I got more than I bargained for. No wonder he made a shot 0.4 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs in '04. No wonder why he buried a clutch three pointer against the Orlando Magic in Game four of the 2009 NBA Finals. No wonder he is one of my favorite Lakers.

Almost an hour later, the rest of the Smart All-Stars showed up for their shootaround. One by one they sprinted to the court. Javale Mcgee came out. Derrick Williams. Derrick Rose. Chris Paul. Tyreke Evans. James Harden. And then Kevin Durant. I still think surreal. It was unbelievable. I thought it was just I dream but here I was seeing the guys I idolize in the same court where Robert Jaworski, et al frequently plays. I want to pinch myself to wake up from this dream but it is real. I was really seeing Derrick Rose shooting threes. I was really seeing Durant shooting balls while wearing a bag pack. This is really the greatest day of my life but it was not yet complete. There is Kobe Bryant to come and perhaps Manny Pacquiao to watch the game.

Then the lights began to dim. It was the signal the event everyone waiting is about to begin. The cheer dancers were the first one to come out. Wearing skirts and sports bras and held pom-poms. Every male probably staring at them. Then the Smart Gilas players were called. Oddly, they were collectively called not individually like the PBA All-Stars the night earlier and finally the Smart All-Stars. Due to the lock out the players are prohibited to carry the NBA's name. Williams was the first one introduced being the rookie, then, Mcgee, their only true center in the line-up. Evans followed suit. Harden was next, then Fisher. Then CP3 was called. Durant followed him. Rose, the reigning MVP, was announced next. And lastly, arguably the best player in the line-up according to me made his entrance. All hell broke loose. Flashes from cameras were everywhere. Cheers were hard to decipher. Kobe Bryant is really the man.

First Quarter

After some photo-ops with the personalities watching there, the game I went to watch finally started. To tell you frankly, I came to as well our National Team. Why? Because i will be their number one critic come September and I have to be fair and see them live at least once. If there is a game they will convince me they good as they claim, this game against the best players in the world will be it. The visiting team won the tip-off. Kobe Bryant, who else, made the first attempt. Little bit short. It's Gilas turn now. Mark Barroca was the starting point guard (I don't like it but Alapag, probably one of the best point guards in Asia, does not regularly practice with the team so Rajko Toroman had to trust his instinct). Barroca initiated the play that ended with Marcus Douthit making the first basket. First blood for Gilas. Durant made a follow up dunk to tie the game. It was Gilas turn to run the open court and Japeth Aguilar made a roaring slam in front of Durant. Gilas 4- Smart 2. The crowd went wild. Funny thing was we are all cheering both sides. It is odd thing in basketball that you are rooting for both teams.

After a couple of defensive stops from each sides, Bryant dictated the game by scoring seven points, including a cold blooded three in the first quarter. The Gilas players did not know what hit them trailing 7 points after the first quarter. I have been in too many basketball games here in this coliseum but nothing can be compared to this. All walks of life were there, from kids to teenagers to grownups up to elder ones. Imagine I was in the same venue with Senator Trillanes, Manny Pangilinan, Willie Revillame, Aga Muhlach, and other notable personalities. Then there were the signs or posters. It will always be around. From CP3 signs to MVP Rose posters to Marry my wife Kobe proposal. The best sign probably would be the "We want Scalabrine" post. All laughed at that one. MVP was even flattered when he saw a sign that says "It was a SMART move to bring the NBA players here. Thank you MVP."

Second Quarter

The game was inches from going to a blowout like the other night with James Harden from the OKC Thunder leading the way for the All-Stars. On the other side, the Filipinos keep missing their shots beyond the three point arc. Coach Toroman kept on shuffling his boys to keep the game close but it did not work. Next thing you know, Gilas trails by 19 at and of the first half. Sure, it's a huge lead but there were no frustration or disappointment from me. I am getting the best of both world in this game so there is no point complaining. Indeed, the basketball fan in me was stronger than the basketball junkie that I am. At least, I was impressed on Toroman's system but I was overwhelmed by the NBA Stars showing their stuff in front of me. And I guess, I am not the only one with that kind of emotions. Most likely all of us (20,000 strong) felt the same way I did.

At this stage, I thought I was not watching a basket ball game; it was more of watching a concert. Kobe being the playing coach acted as the musical conductor. Chris Paul orchestrates the plays. Rose and Harden played with the ball calmly to blend in. Kevin Durant executes the rhythm of the team. I was really amazed by all of these.

Halftime

I did not move from the place I was watching because I do not have any companion to reserve my place. Guilt was over me because I did not brought along my father. This kind of game is a Father and Son bonding time. I saw a lot of them there. There was a dad with his child, a grown-up with his dad, etc. A moment for fathers and sons who love the game of basketball like the way me and my dad like it. It was really a shame; I did not have my dad with me in that special occasion. Nonetheless, I already had that chance a couple of years ago when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar together with past NBA players played an exhibition game here.
Fifteen minutes. The time before the second half resumes. To kill time, the organizers honored Brian Villoria for his recent triumph in the boxing ring. Also, Willie's dancers engaged in a steamy performance to satisfy the huge crowd. A few minutes later, the players returned to their respective bench.

Third Quarter

In fairness to the Gilas guys, they were challenging the NBA guys to make this really a game to be serious. And so, Kobe being himself guarded the best players Gilas can offer. First it was Chris Tiu and then Dondon Hontiveros. All gave their best against Bryant because they knew he was the best. It was really a joy to see. Gilas made mini-rallies at the third to cut the huge deficit. However, how much the guys tried, the superstars were superior to them. But I still appreciated their efforts. Defending superb players is a tough act for our players.

Meanwhile, fans are screaming loudly but not in disappointment but admiration to all players. Something that not happens regularly in basketball games. They cheer all players flashed in the big screen. When MVP was shown in the Game Cube, the screen in the scoreboard above the Big Dome, the crowd applauded but when the guy seated next to him was flashed, the crowd booed. It was Revilliame. I do not hate the guy but I do not pity him because he probably deserved it.

Fourth Quarter

Final 12 minutes. Last chance for Gilas to come back in the game.  Last chance for the fans to see these NBA heroes play in front of their eyes.  Last chance for me to experience this once of a lifetime moment that likely will never happen again. And so, every time a player had the ball, the crowd chant his name. MVP! MVP when Rose had the ball. CP3! CP3 when Chris Paul holding the ball.

Erstwhile, as Kobe was making a play, the crowd was shouting. Funny thing the name they shouted was not one of the players. A certain representative from Saranggani was making his way in the courtside seats. It was Manny Pacquiao, the pound for pound boxing champion of the world. When Chris Paul made a pass in the backboard to Durant, who dunked the ball in the rim, Gilas called for time. Hurriedly, Kobe approached Manny and greeted each other like childhood friends rekindle their past. Extraordinary. MVP of the hardcourt together with the MVP of the boxing ring. Manny was asked to visit the huddle of the players. In an instant, the stars became fans. They admire Manny. Chris Paul even mimic Pacquiao's boxing stance as if they want to box each other in the basketball court.

After that short interruption, the basketball gods were generous to us. The guys in our backcourt were hitting from rainbow country. Alas, Gilas made their comeback. As a result, suddenly we renew our allegiance to the Philippines and whenever the Smart All-Stars had the ball shouts of Defense! Defense! were heard in all corners of the venue. They cut the lead up to seven but they ran out of time. Harden, Evans, and Mcgee, with the final shot which was a thundering slam dunk, shut the door at us. Final score was 98-89.

Some fans were shouting overtime when Gilas made their rally but I wanted to yell them that there is no overtime in exhibition games. But I did not waste my time with guys like that because they are fans. As for me, the hoops junkie, I just savored every minute before the final buzzer is sounded. Like everyone in the stadium, I did not move. The game ended but we were still there. As a reward to the fans, the players gave their jerseys and shoes to lucky fans. We honored them and they honored as in return. Simple as that. Basketball should be like that. We play for fun but we also play for honor. It was nice those stars reminded me that principle.

July 24, 2011 will always be the date I lost my wallet. However, July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I saw Kobe Bryant doing his trade mark jump shot. July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I watch Derrick Rose his signature move of driving towards to the basket for a layup even though it missed. July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I saw Kevin Durant revealed his tattoos in his whole body. July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I witness Derek Fisher's admirable work ethic. July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I saw Chris Paul classic crossover. July 24, 2011 will be remembered as the date I laid my eyes on Harden's beard. Indeed, Araneta Coliseum served as the venue where I have seen my Most Unforgettable Basketball Game.

LMS Slam Book: LMS 1st Anniversary

Foreword

As we all know July 18, 2011 was the 1st anniversary of the Law Mountaineering Society. From the Super Six who began this hobby that has become more of a regularly basis ballooned to 24. What started to be a disappointing start transpired to six successful climbs in four mountains plus a splendid vacation in Pangasinan.

Traditionally, an anniversary special comprises of a series or collection of unforgettable moments or significant people. However, we only celebrate our first "birthday", so I decided to do a slam book style -like what you guys did during your youth- instead in commemorating our anniversary. (Facebook na lang kasi naabutan ko, hindi yung Slambook kaya sinubukan ko 'to.)

Favorite Line: There are so many quotes that were memorable but I would go with the remark of Dennis, "Wala ka ng mapagmamaliit sa amin, Julius, when he was answering the call of nature in Mt. Batulao. (But if I heard Alice's "Condensed" remark instead of compress while taking a group picture, I will go with that.)

Scary Moment/s: I have seen a Santelmo in Pico de Loro. Heard about Grace’s vision of a ghost following us on our way to Mt. Pulag. However, I would go to the close calls of Dennis and Hydee in Mt. Pico de Loro. Seeing what happened to them, scared a lot of shit of me than somebody threatened to shoot me at point blank range.

Favorite Mountain: Probably, Mt. Batulao, my first mountain that I hiked. I have been there three times. Nice people. Mt. Pulag would have been my second choice.

Unforgettable Climbing/Hiking Experience: (Unofficially) My solo climb in Mt. Samat. It was perfect for a history lover at a historical place on a historical date (April 9). It was my first time to go to Bataan. And so it was historical for me. Plus there was the little commotion I brought to the Presidential Security Group (PSG) staff at the top of the mountain. It was indeed unforgettable. (Officially) 10 people overcame "hypothermia" inside in a tent which is sheltered in a hut during a super cold and rainy night in the highest mountain in Luzon, i.e. Mt. Pulag.

Favorite Side-Trip Moment: It's hard to choose one. There's Mikay's ala Russian roulette in picking where to eat was fun but I would go to our side trip in Baguio City when we went to Mt. Pulag. My first visit there since the city was hurt by a strong earthquake in 1990. I will not forget my walk in Session Road and my pilgrimage to SM Baguio, where we ate our dinner in Tokyo Tokyo.

You would do anything for: A bottle of water. It sounds lame and stupid but during our freedom climb in Pico de Loro, we learned a valuable lesson, and water is indeed a necessity.

Favorite stranger that you met: I have three. No.3 The DENR head in Benguet. No. 2 Mamang Sorbetero in Mt. Batulao. My numero uno would be Uncle Stew. Of course he is no longer a stranger to us.

Favorite food: I would pick Vhince's sinigang in Mt. Pulag. Because of the unsupportive weather, he had difficulties of cooking the best ever Sinigang na Baboy. In the end of that day, I've had probably five servings of it. I did not mind the taste due to hunger.

If you have to change one thing what happened in your adventures, what would it be: Probably, I'll convert the two paper bags brought by You-Know-Who (Peace!) into a North Face Bag.

Favorite transportation: I guess nothing would beat the vehicle we boarded to Mt. Pulag. It was like riding a rollercoaster. Add to the fact that some woman is sitting at the top of the roof that carried tons of fish with her.

What mountain do you want to climb/conquer in the future: Mt. Everest. Still seeking the most magnificent view ever. I believe it is in there.

What are the things usually in your backpack: clothes, pair of slippers, and towel.

What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning during an overnight hike: The Sun Rise

Storms: Cool or Crazy? Come to think of it, due to past experiences, Storms are incredibly cool.

Which Celebrity/Famous Person you would want to be with one of our adventures: No Brainer, Cristine Reyes. Do I need to explain why? If she's busy, I would go for Mark Zuckerburg because he frequently hikes and most importantly, he is a billionaire.
What is the first thing you do when you reach the summit: Pray.

Anything you would like to say about/to me: Thank you for giving me the chance to experience the beauty of Mother Nature. I get the chance to travel different places because of you. Furthermore, I had the chance to have so many friends through this endeavor.

How should I remember you: The guy who keeps on bragging este blogging everything that transpires in our adventures.

Who would you want the most to join in every trek: Myself because I am responsible to chronicle every events of the group. (Writer's Note: Pagbigyan ninyo na ako magbuhat ng sariling upuan)

Afterword

If you have time, I encourage you to write your own slam book about your experience in our group. I apologize for not participating in our anniversary climb. Nonetheless, I thank you allfor being part of our group. Hope for more memorable adventures to come for us. (Sana nga lang makumpleto tayo.)

Freedom Climb in Pico de Loro

Prologue

On 12 June 1898, at Emilio Aguinaldo's ancestral home in Cavite, Philippine independence was proclaimed and The Act of Declaration of Philippine Independence was read. The act had been prepared and written in Spanish by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, who also read its proclamation.

113 years later, hundreds of mountaineers commemorated the Philippines Independence Day in Mt. Pico de Loro, which is located where else but in the Province of Cavite. The event, dubbed as the Freedom Climb, was participate by mountain enthusiasts all over the country as a bid to set a new Guiness World Record in the most number of mountaineers organized in spontaneous locations.

Chapter One
Emergency

Three days before the climb, non-stop rain caused by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone that resulted to Typhoon Dodong was all across the country that one can only clearly predict what to expect in the mountains with that kind of weather. This kind of matter is no stranger to the Law Mountaineering Society, which prior stints were conducted while raining. They might actually call themselves as Storm Chasers as well. Thus, not even a weather forecast of a thunderstorm would prevent them from participating in the Freedom Climb. Probably, the only thing that could prevent them from climbing is when Commissioner David Stern decides to moved Game 6 of the NBA Finals on the 12th of June (Manila Time). Fortunately and obviously, it did not happen. So there was no stopping them on their much needed endeavor because classes resumes on Monday.

The mountain to conquer this time is Pico de Loro. Many years ago, the Spaniards aboard their galleons to Manila Bay noticed the form of a giant parrot, perched in the forested mountains in the province of Cavite. They called it "Pico de Loro" or "Parrot's Peak." It is 664 MASL or a refreshing four-hour minor climb. The group visited this mountain almost a year ago and it was definitely quite an unforgettable experience. Honestly, it was hard to beat.
On this occasion, only five of the previous ten hikers returned plus three new "guests" of the mountain.

The meeting place was in KFC Baclaran branch in Diplomat Condominum along Roxas Boulevard in Paranaque. 9 am was the ETD but being Filipinos, which had no timeliness in their veins, it was not followed. It should be worth to recall that during the last time, a member came three hours beyond the scheduled time and the rest were already inside the bus when he arrived. On this edition, he still arrived over the time limit but he was not the last one to arrive. That award goes to Weng. Phillip, Hydee, Vhince and his cousin Mark were inside the fast food chain when she arrived. Dennis and Raffy were in the market making last minute shopping. At first, Weng did not notice them inside so Phillip, who had seen her, went outside to call her. The first thing of business was reacquainting with each other. Everyone knew each other except for Mark because they are schoolmates and had climbed together before.

It was already past ten o'clock when they settled in and set to depart the place. Amidst to everyone, Weng had second thoughts of going. And so while the others were already in the other side of the road, Weng had convinced Raffy, being the team leader that she had an emergency to attend. With that unfortunate incident, six were only left to accomplish the feat. It was a good thing, Vhince decided to join and bring his cousin because he only knew of the activity the previous day. Upon learning Weng's reason why she had bolted out, Dennis, who celebrated his birthday a day before, even joked that the emergency was his cousin Felix. Eventually he was correct, while in the bus, the couple texted that they were also going to Pico de Loro.

When they reached the last bus stop, they moved out from the vehicle and rested in a cafeteria along the main road. They decided to wait for the two before they proceed to Magnetic Hills, which is the jump-off point of the mountain. During the long wait for the love birds, the six ate their lunch and they had an interesting meal because a fly was an added ingredient in their food. Fortunately, Vhince had noticed it after they had eaten their food. After more than an hour of patiently waiting for the two late-entries, they had arrived aboard
a tricycle. Still, it took an eternity before they had resumed their journey (Courtesy of Weng's unlimited picks in the grocery store). Going to the DENR site requires riding a tricylce or a van. The latter was unavailable so they chose the former. On board in a tricycle uphill is one of those moments that you feel like riding a turtle. The other trikes were able to ease through the tough road but the one stood out the most. It was so slow that even a camel can passed it through. What would seem like a long ride, Vhince, Mark and Phillip arrived at the DENR station. They had affixed their signatures in the registration list and they were off to the jump-off point.

Chapter Two
Lost in Translation

This so-called Freedom Climb was also dubbed as the Birthday Climb. Two of its pioneers celebrated their birthdays during the past week. Phillip was still eleven years old but another year of experience that amounted to 15 years, meanwhile, Dennis had his Nth birthday. Phillip brought food to eat while Dennis provided the alcohol for the evening festivities. It was kind of ironic to celebrate another year of existence in a mountain that almost claims you the previous year. Dennis had a scary stint here the last time around while Phillip had his share of scary stories as well. Needless to say, they somewhat own the mountain or is it vice-versa. Nonetheless, all of them were excited for yet another unforgettable trek.

At the very same spot they started a year ago, they embarked another journey to the mountain. This time around, they had no guides to accompany them. Of course, there are risks included with such decisions like getting lost in the mountain is one of them. However, someone said that all things that worth doing will be difficult. And this sort of thing surely fits on the worth doing category. Thus, it was around two in the afternoon when they started their ascent to the mountain. Felix, who was hungry, ate his lunch while walking. Their pace was quite the normal walk in the mountains. The weather was friendly to them. There were no rains as well as the scorching heat from the sun. There were no dusts at all. What was left by the rain was dry mud. The trail towards the mountain was covered by trees.
All over it were trace marks such as stones and ribbons so that a hiker should know what route to take.

Another registration site was passed through by the group. It means another 20 Pesos registration fee for each of them to pay. They rested there for awhile. Vhince and his cousin fetch a bottle of water there. It was the only water source in the area. The place was somewhat a park intended as a lounge for the hikers. It was comfortable there. It should be noted, the only animal in that part of the mountain was a horse. One female hiker from the UP-Los Banos group was caught surprise that there was a horse in front of her. If she did not recognize it, the horse had kicked her up to the top of the mountain. After a short rest, the group continued its climb. They were above the normal pace that they have surpassed the 18-man group that was ahead of them. Aside from their fellow hikers; one can only felt the presence of the mountain. Whether it’s from the trees or the muddy and rocky trails or the chirping sounds produced by its visiting birds.

Everything that happen the rest of the way is incomparable to what transpired next to half of the members of the group. Phillip, Raffy, Vhince, and Mark were way ahead from Dennis, Felix, Hydee, and Weng. Probably because of the hype of being near to the top, no one noticed the purple ribbon on the right portion of the trail and they went straight ahead. Shortly after, they met two female climbers stranded in a stiff cliff trying to make their ascent. Uncertain of the trail, Phillip asked Raffy to go ahead and try to look if it is the right trail. Upon seeing a white ribbon marker, Raffy said Positive! Positive! Remarks that signal that they were in the right track. The two women were still not satisfied that they remained there while the three followed suit to Raffy. Being there previously felt that they never chartered the place before but resigned to that conclusion due to the facts that were laid to them. They waited for the others to come but they did not. And so they went straight ahead. It was quite obvious that it was not the road to take because there were branches
that covered the whole trail. And still they continued to move on. After a few guesses and hunches of which way to proceed they reached a breathtaking view deck of the mountain. Because the place was all theirs for their taking, it was peaceful and wonderful feeling of seeing the peak of the mountain. Even though they ended the wrong path, a glorious sight was lo and behold in front of their eyes.

In the first instance they set foot there, Phillip instantly knew they are in the wrong place. He told it to Raffy but he did not believe him and even bet for his life. Obviously because there were no people at sight, Phillip was right and he teased him, It is pity to lose your life. Still, being himself, he allowed the others to savor the moment. Then, he felt that he was the bearer of bad news so he told them that they have to leave. Meanwhile, the other group made it to the right camp site in the shoulder viewing deck of the mountain. They were worried of not seeing the other four there. Dennis thought that Phillip had go to the summit to pray the rosary which was his routine but had thoughts of why they did not waited for them and left their things. They look everywhere for them but sill there were no signs of them. Fortunately, there was a telecommunication signal so Weng called Phillip.

Phillip had just crawled down on the stiff cliff they had been earlier with the two female hikers when his phone rang. He answered it and recognized Weng's voice. She asked him, where they are. Phillip replied that they were on their way. He did not asked for instructions and even did not told them that they took the wrong turn. He just told her that they just took a side trip in the mountains. Fortunately, they were able to retrace their path and saw the purple ribbon that they should have noticed earlier. And by the way, there was a fence on the trail they had passed but it was open for still unknown reasons. It was minutes before sunset when they had reached the camp site, which was covered by a lot of people. It was crowded and noisy which was much different from the previous deck. Upon seeing them, the others had their sigh of relief that nothing happened to them. (Writer's Note: The four did not get lost; they were sightseeing in the mountain.)

Chapter Three
Yakitate Pico

Because of what happened, the four were the talk of the town or mountain rather. Felix made fun of the incident and probably telling everyone that they were the ones who got lost in the woods. The rest of the group, who was not part of it, also cracked some jokes to them. Of course, the four "navigators" were quite embarrassed because of what had transpired. It was sure an experience for Mark, who is a graduating Pol-Sci major in Colegio San Juan de Letran, because it is his first ever climb. Nonetheless, Vhince was the standout of the group during the evening due to his creativity in the Culinary Arts. With little resources, he managed to prepare dinner for the whole group. It took more than an hour to finish it but the wait was worth it. The meal was splendid probably due to their hunger but it was really good.

Most of the group slept early because of the tiresome adventure earlier. Dennis, Felix and Mark were the ones awake and drunk some brandy. Later, due to the noise of the other campers, Phillip woke up and joined the three. They just talked about what happened earlier. And when it stopped, basketball was the topic because of the ongoing NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks versus LeBron James and the Forces of Evil a.k.a the Miami Heat. Then they ran out of chaser because they had inadequate supply of water. And so they called it a day and went to their respective tents.

The night was cold but still the weather was kind and did not soak rain throughout the evening. The moon and the stars provided the light for the hikers. The place was noisy due to the big crowd but it was perhaps okay for everyone. The ground was uneasy but has been comfortable all throughout. Indeed, the mountain was much accommodating to them.

Chapter Four
The Parrot's Peak

Due to the bad weather the last time they reached the summit, they did not go beyond to the Parrot's Peak that is situated right across the summit. This time, they will not waste the opportunity of not going there. They had no rush of reaching the peak during the sun rises, probably, due to a lot of people going there as well. Nevertheless, they ascended to the top while the sun has showed its true glory and might. After everyone had eaten their breakfast, they prepared for their assault to the top of the mountain.

On their way up, the group followed the 18-crew roster that included the two hikers that got lost earlier. Naturally, Felix bombarded non-stop jokes along the way. When they did reached the top, there were already a lot of people taking their pictures offered by the mountains full scenic view. Dennis brought along a tripod but it was not used because of the summit's landscape. After the photo-op sessions, they proceed to the peak of the mountain that resembles a parrot. Hydee declined to join the rest of the group and waited for them at the summit.

The path going there is a rocky downhill trail and then to the muddy stiff way and up again to the boulders situated there. The only challenge is the six feet ascend to the peak that requires the use of a rope. The nylon rope tied there is quite old but still strong enough to hold a person. The rest were able to climb up except for Mark who had a change of heart that he decided not to push through. Nonetheless, the group continued their climb and eventually reached its top. The view from the top is not majestic (Writer's Note: I am still looking forward to seeing something majestic maybe in the Himalayas someday) but still it was marvelous. A 360 degree of the mountains nearby, the calm and peaceful sea in Batangas, and the island of corregidor. It was quite extraordinary. One can really appreciate the importance of Independence Day when he can freely see the glorious things that Nature had to offer for Mankind.
While going back to the camp site, they made several photo sessions courtesy of the lone digital camera of the group. There were still a lot of hikers making their ascent. One group resembled a fast food chain crew that Phillip instantly asked one of them for a Half-Steak order (A code for 1-piece Burger Steak of Jollibee). Then he was shocked that the lady replied as if she was in the counter, "Half-Steak Please.) And everyone relayed the order down to the last one. He had the last laugh though because he asked for extra rice to that last person in the line. In any rate, it was already hot when they reached the camp site. They packed all their things and prepared for their descent.

Chapter Five
Water-Less Descent

Imagine a life without water. Catastrophic indeed. Now, imagine a 644-meter above sea level walk without any water, it is neat catastrophic as well. With no water, the group hurriedly went down to the water source that was too far from the camp site. It felt that they were in the desert but instead of sand, only mud was on their feet. Dehydrated is the only apt word that can describe them, They
made no unnecessary movements and unnecessary remarks even. The only thing on their mind was water. Water. H2O. Agua. Tubig. It took them a climb to the mountain to realize the importance of water. Life is remarkably cruel indeed.

The original plan was to visit the waterfalls after the hike but thanks largely to the lack of water supply; the plan was scratched and went straight to the water source. Dennis stuck with the original plan and move ahead to the water falls. The rest of the group continued their quest of the Holy Grail or water rather. Most of the group was anxious to see the jackfruit or langka that swarmed over the fences because it marks that they are near to the promise land. Two hours of trekking without water is similar to a title drought of 17 years (Ask Jason Kidd), and then finally Oasis came. Water at last arrived in their mouth. They even did not mind the much expensive can soda just to quench their thirst.

They rested for awhile there. Eat Indian mangoes. Chat with the people there. More importantly, Sit and relax there. No more worries. It was really a day of independence, Free from distractions. Free from problems. Free from being malevolent students. Free from law professors. Free from work. Certainly it was a momentary day of freedom. The exclamation point would be a refreshing swim in the falls.

Chapter Six
Phillip and the Two Brassieres

Only Felix, Weng, Mark and Phillip went back towards to the waterfalls. Weng brought some refreshments for Dennis, who had already spent an hour or so in the cold water. Like cars that were refueled, they were rushing intensely for the falls. On their way home, they
passed a lot of people who were thirsty as they were earlier. Thus, Weng played as a Good Samaritan and offered a bottle of water to the exhausted hikers. Felix and Weng were worried about
Dennis while Phillip was hoping badly that the two ladies, who were liberal to show their brassieres to the people in the summit, would be there. And sure when he arrived at the falls, he was disappointed. At least, Dianne, the cute Morena from the UPLB group, was there. Briefly, she even posed with only her top on while in the water. Then, when Phillip took a dip into the water, his prayers were answered. The two women who look like those in the Koreanovelas in the boob tube had arrived.

The two immediately took off their clothes and went straight to the falls. If there were really goddesses, they fit in that category nicely. Interestingly, all eyes were at them. It seemed that they were just taking a cold shower in the bathroom. That was Mother Nature at her very best. Felix, who was with Weng at the falls, swam back near the shore to avoid the lady while Phillip swam over there to take himself a shower too.

The water was so cold that you can use it as a refrigerator for your beverage. It is also to deep that it was fortunate that there were big rocks to lean all over the place. It was really quite refreshing to swim on the water. It took away the tiredness of the body. An hour in the water was more than enough and they agreed to return to the registration site.

Chapter Seven
Raindrops keep falling on my head

The five of them were anxious to get back when the previously gracious weather turned vicious and provided thunder and a ton of rain. All of them were definitely soaked and wet. Instead of being clean after a refrishing swim in the waterfalls, they were wet, dirty and muddy. Fortunately, when the rain started pouring, they were almost halfway through their destination.

♪♪Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me.♪♪

It seems that they had a soundtrack while walking in the rain. The last time around was that they were searching water and this time they were escaping from water. How ironic it seems. Meanwhile, Vhince and Raffy were preparing their lunch when the heavy rain fell while Hydee was taking a bath in the rest room. That is really not a perfect timing. Things like this always happen especially to this people. Rain and the LMS are inseparable.

They were all in the hut when the rain had finally ended. Most of the hikers who took shelter left immediately. The group chose to eat first before they left the vicinity. It took another hour before they continue their journey. The trail is not muddy and wet. They patiently struggled to exit the mountains but certainly enjoy every precious moment of it. As Phillip had said to a couple of hikers earlier at the top, "Thank you for coming and Come again soon," is a perfect phrase the mountain can use for her special visitors.
